Company's security research team works with affected customer to devise solution

Radware (NASDAQ: RDWR), the leading provider of integrated application delivery solutions for business-smart networking, today announced it is the first to offer protection against the cyber attacks that recently caused the slowdown or crash of approximately 27 websites – government and commercial – in the US and Korea and is still ongoing.

The attacks, which appear to be a variant of the MyDoom (defined as MyDoom.EA) worm potentially delivered through an email payload, generated a well-coordinated distributed denial of service (DDoS) offensive on pre-selected targets. The attacks caused havoc for government and commercial websites beginning on the 4th of July weekend in the US and spreading to South Korean government and commercial websites with the attacks being renewed again on the 9th. Approximately 50-65,000 computers were recruited into the botnet, which flooded target websites, such as the Federal Trade Commission, New York Stock Exchange, and Yahoo! Finance in the U.S. and Shinhan Bank, Naver.com and the Defense Ministry of South Korea, with access requests causing them to slow or crash.

Radware’s Security Operations Center (SOC) that also identified and offered a fix for the recent “Slow Loris” denial-of-service attack and the iPhone Safari vulnerability, quickly mobilized to devise a solution with an affected customer. The end result was the creation of signatures that protect these sites and others at risk from this newly created wave of cyber attacks that while deceptively simple, still managed to evade the defense mechanisms of the affected sites. The signatures will be available for download for customers in a few hours on Radware’s website at: http://www.radware.com/Customer/SecurityZone/default.aspx.

“Attacks like these can be highly detrimental to the running of a government agency or a business,” stated Avi Chesla, Vice President Security Products, Radware. “These types of incidents once again demonstrate the advantages of implementing a hybrid solution like DefensePro. DefensePro’s unique APSolute Immunity capabilities offer a powerful combination of real-time behavioral identification and protection, which are supplemented by traditional, research-based signatures for comprehensive attack prevention and mitigation.”
