“Traffic” is the generic term for the load on any communications system or device. One of the jobs of a network administrator or network security professional is to monitor devices such as firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPSs) and intrusion detection systems (IDSs). IPS and IDS systems examine traffic on a computer network to identify any suspicious traffic that may be of malicious origin, depending on whether they have IPS or IDS, the malicious traffic is either neutralized or reported on with the aim of not affecting the production network.
