Carrier deployments of Openstack and NFV move from science project to global rollout

After lots of good BBQ and craft beer in Austin last week, I’ve had a chance to reflect on what I saw at the Openstack conference. If we weren’t already convinced that carriers are determined to break vendor lock-in and deploy Openstack and NFV—no matter what the challenges— we should be now.

I spoke in a packed room about how Radware is proposing to leverage new OpenDaylight frameworks to more efficiently deploy service flow chains (SFCs), which offer high scale and significant cost reduction over expensive legacy ADC HW. In addition, the SFCs enable carriers to move from a static network model to a dynamic model where they can create optimal network slices that are tuned to offer the best characteristics for a particular network service. In addition, I saw carriers like AT&T who have already worked through the pain of operationalizing Openstack clouds. This occurred manually at first, but now they have created their own automation tools to scale their Openstack cloud deployments and roll out hundreds of new installations in 2016, all of these running on top of cost effective white box VNFs. There has been much pain in getting here, but I think carriers are turning the corner with their eyes on the prize: Speed, cost and agility.
