Apparently, ransom cyber threats are not only about encrypting files. Over the past week, there has been an exponential increase in DDoS for ransom threats. This is an increasingly popular tactic of extortion and financial gain for hackers and hacktivists alike - "if payment isn't received, a cyber-attack will be launched that can result in damaged reputation and lost customers/revenue."

With the stated goal of "erasing Israel from the internet" in protest against claimed crimes against the Palestinian people, Anonymous will launch its yearly operation against Israel. Named OpIsrael, it is a cyber-attack timed for April 7th by an array of hacktivist groups that join forces with the greater Anonymous collective. For this year's attack, hackers have provided tools and technical guidance for the execution of OpIsrael.

Since our previous ERT alert outlining the potential cyber-attack against Donald Trump on April fool’s day, the presidential candidate was eventually hit and online entities of key Trump properties were taken offline as of Friday, April 1st 2016. The day before, members of the Anonymous collective stated that the planned attack  on Donald Trump was a ploy and symbolically planned for April 1st  to gain public attention for the operation.  Shortly after the paste was posted, another Anonymous member posted a paste to Ghostbin disregarding the previous paste and announcing OpTrump2016  and their plans to DDoS Donald Trump’s website.

Hackers assaulted the website of the Philippines’ elections commission to protest both the integrity of the upcoming presidential elections in addition to security concerns regarding the electronic voting. The website was hacked and defaced on Sunday, March 27th by AnonymousPH, and a few hours later was assaulted by another group of hackers - LulzSec Pilipinas – which hacked and dumped the database of COMELEC voter’s polls.

Hackers were able to cripple the media organizations with volumetric DDoS attacks, resulting in 3 hours of downtime for several media outlets, including Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen, Aftonbladet, and others.
